A 21-year-old man from Penitas, Texas, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a deadly human smuggling operation. Jesus Grimaldo, known as Chuy, pleaded guilty in October 2025 to harboring and bringing in illegal aliens.
Grimaldo’s scheme involved smuggling over 100 people from the Rio Grande Valley past Border Patrol checkpoints. His organization used firearms, kidnapped victims, and put them in danger of injury or death.
The investigation began in May 2024 after a man’s body was found on the side of a road in Brooks County. Authorities linked Grimaldo to the death through phone payments and discovered a complex operation involving drivers and smuggling trips.
Grimaldo’s sentence was enhanced due to his leadership role in the conspiracy and his responsibility for the death of a migrant. He will serve 120 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
