Arlington Family Accused of $8.5M Tax Fraud Scheme

Four members of an Arlington, Texas family are facing federal charges for a multimillion-dollar tax refund fraud scheme that bilked over $8.5 million from the IRS.

The defendants, including David Hunt and his twin sons Brandon and Baylon Hunt, allegedly conspired to file false tax returns on behalf of purported trusts, seeking millions they were not entitled to receive.

According to the indictment, the scheme began in 2016. The Hunts also utilized falsified financial instruments and altered money orders to bolster their fraudulent claims. They reportedly shared proceeds by transferring funds among themselves, using the refunds to purchase luxury goods, cryptocurrency, and real estate.

Each defendant is charged with conspiracy and aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns. If convicted, they face up to five years in prison for conspiracy and three years per false return. The case is being prosecuted by the Tax Division of the Justice Department and IRS Criminal Investigation.

The family’s scheme serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to exploit the nation’s tax system for personal gain.

Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Karen E. Kelly and Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson announced the charges, emphasizing that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
