Armed Bank Robber Pleads Guilty in Orlando
A 37-year-old Deleon Springs man has pleaded guilty to armed bank robbery, according to Acting United States Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III.
Robert Gordon Shaw faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of armed bank robbery.
The robbery took place on April 19, 2013, at a Regions Bank in Sanford, where Shaw and a separately charged individual, Matthew Anthony Cosimini, displayed a fake explosive detonation device and demanded money from a bank teller.
During the robbery, Shaw and Cosimini also possessed a semiautomatic pistol with ammunition. The bank teller handed over approximately $14,098 in bank money after Shaw passed a demand note and displayed the detonation device.
Shaw and Cosimini fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, leading to a high-speed pursuit by responding officers from the Sanford Police Department. The officers eventually stopped and arrested Shaw and Cosimini one mile from the bank, recovering the firearm and detonation device from the stolen vehicle.
An investigation revealed that the detonation device was a fake and that there were no explosives inside the bank. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Sanford Police Department and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Searle. Shaw and Cosimini are scheduled to be sentenced in federal court at a later date.
