Aaron Young, Armed Career Criminal Sentencing, Rhode Island 2023

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a major blow to the city’s underworld, Aaron Young, 37, of Providence, was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for his role in a brazen drug trafficking operation.

Young, an armed career criminal with a history of assault, robbery, and drug trafficking convictions, was arrested in January 2013 by the Providence Police Department in connection with a sting operation targeting his illicit activities.

According to court documents, Young was taken into custody as a parole violator on his previous state convictions. The arrest was the culmination of a joint investigation by the Providence Police and the Rhode Island DEA drug task force.

During the raid, police recovered a loaded 9mm handgun with 15 live rounds in the magazine, as well as items used in the sale and distribution of cocaine. A search of Young’s apartment yielded 2.1 grams of cocaine in five packets, which was discarded by Young as he attempted to flee the scene.

Young pleaded guilty on October 28, 2013, to one count each of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and being a felon in possession of a firearm. At sentencing, U.S. District Court Judge Mary M. Lisi ordered Young to serve 5 years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul F. Daly, Jr., led the prosecution, with the assistance of R.I. Assistant Attorney General Jim Baum. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the R.I. DEA drug task force assisted the Providence Police in the investigation.

The sentencing marks a significant victory for law enforcement in their efforts to combat the scourge of crime in Rhode Island. As one law enforcement official noted, ‘Today’s sentence sends a strong message that those who engage in armed career crime will be held accountable for their actions.’
