Maurice Edwards, Armed Carjacking, District of Columbia 2024

A 20-year-old Washington D.C. resident has been charged with armed carjacking in a brazen Northeast D.C. heist.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Maurice Edwards, 20, was charged yesterday with armed carjacking in District of Columbia Superior Court. Edwards is being held pending a June 14, 2024, preliminary hearing.

The alleged carjacking occurred on March 11, 2024, at 48th Pl and Lee St, NE. Edwards, along with his accomplice Auzsa Beatty, reportedly drove a car through a stop sign, striking the victim’s vehicle. The pair then pulled out a gun and ordered the victim out of his car before making off with his vehicle.

The victim immediately reported the incident to police, who later tracked down the stolen vehicle parked near Beatty’s home. Beatty, 28, of Washington D.C., was previously charged with carjacking and has been detained pending her August 12, 2024, trial.

Edwards’ case will be joined with Beatty’s in court. The investigation is being led by the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Cocuzza will be handling the prosecution.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that charges are merely an allegation and that Edwards is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

As the city struggles to combat rising carjacking incidents, the prosecution of Edwards and Beatty serves as a reminder of the severity of these crimes and the consequences that await those who commit them.

The case highlights the need for community awareness and cooperation in preventing and reporting carjackings. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

With the city’s carjacking epidemic showing no signs of slowing down, the Grimy Times will continue to provide in-depth coverage of these incidents and the individuals responsible for them.
