District Man Gets 30 Years for Stabbing 2 Men in Northwest DC, Killing 1
A Washington D.C. man has been handed a 30-year prison sentence for his role in a brutal stabbing that left one man dead and another injured in Northwest D.C. in 2020.
Joseph Melton, 55, was sentenced to 366 months in prison by Superior Court Judge Michael O’Keefe after pleading guilty to second-degree murder while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon.
The crime occurred on January 14, 2020, when Melton approached Kevin Chamberlain in the 1800 block of Connecticut Avenue NW. Chamberlain recognized Melton from college, but didn’t know his name. According to government evidence, Melton made threats and then pulled out a knife, attempting to stab Chamberlain. Chamberlain was able to escape, but Melton fled the scene.
Later that day, at around 1:15 p.m., Melton encountered another victim in the 800 block of Vermont Avenue NW. He stabbed this victim in a vicious attack, but the victim would later recover from their injuries.
About an hour later, Melton re-encountered Chamberlain in the area of 24th and G Streets NW and attacked him again, stabbing him repeatedly. Chamberlain succumbed to his wounds a few hours later.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith commended the work of those investigating the case, including the Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Liebman and Andrea Antonelli from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
Melton’s 30-year sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent crime in our nation’s capital. As the Grimy Times continues to follow this case, we will provide updates on any further developments.
