A brutal stabbing attack in Northwest DC has resulted in a 30-year prison sentence for Joseph Melton, 55, of Washington, DC. Melton pleaded guilty to second degree murder while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon (knife) on March 25, 2024.

The incident occurred on January 14, 2020, when Melton approached Kevin Chamberlain in the 1800 block of Connecticut Ave. NW. Chamberlain recognized Melton from college, but did not know his name. Melton made threats and pulled out a knife, attempting to stab Chamberlain, who managed to escape.

Later that day, Melton stabbed a second victim in the 800 block of Vermont Ave., NW. This victim recovered from their injuries. However, Melton’s violence did not end there. He re-encountered Chamberlain at the intersection of 24th and G Streets, NW, and attacked him again, stabbing him repeatedly. Chamberlain succumbed to his wounds a few hours later.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced the sentencing. They commended the work of the Homicide Branch of the MPD and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, including Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Liebman and Andrea Antonelli.

Melton’s sentence of 366 months in prison was handed down by Superior Court Judge Michael O’Keefe. The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the danger Melton posed to the community. The case highlights the importance of thorough investigations and effective prosecution in bringing violent offenders to justice.

The incident has left a lasting impact on the community, and the sentencing of Joseph Melton brings a measure of closure to the families of the victims. The case serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and the public to prevent such violent crimes from occurring in the future.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Smith acknowledged the efforts of all those involved in the case, from the initial investigation to the final sentencing. Their work has ensured that justice has been served, and a dangerous individual has been held accountable for his actions.
