WASHINGTON – A brazen carjacking in Northeast DC has landed a 19-year-old local man in hot water. Antwan Mitchell, 19, of Washington D.C., pleaded guilty to one count of carjacking arising from a February 2024 offense committed in Northeast Washington D.C., announced U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
On May 14, 2024, Mitchell pleaded guilty in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia to carjacking before the Honorable Jason Park. Judge Park scheduled sentencing for August 5, 2024.
According to court documents, on February 6, 2024, Mitchell and two unidentified co-conspirators carjacked a rideshare driver on Kenilworth Avenue NE. The victim had just dropped off his rideshare passengers when Mitchell and his accomplices surrounded the victim’s SUV. One of Mitchell’s accomplices held the victim at rifle-point while Mitchell and another accomplice demanded the victim’s car keys and wallet.
After the victim handed over his car key, Mitchell and his accomplices drove off in the victim’s SUV. MPD Officers responded immediately, canvassing the area and locating the stolen vehicle. While inspecting the vehicle, police also found a second car used by Mitchell and his accomplices in the crime. Officers pursued the second vehicle and eventually apprehended Mitchell after he fled on foot.
A firearm was recovered from the second vehicle, but Mitchell’s accomplices managed to escape. This case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sabena Auyeung.
Mitchell’s sentencing is scheduled for August 5, 2024. The guilty plea marks a significant development in the case, bringing closure to the victim and the community. The Metropolitan Police Department’s swift response and thorough investigation played a crucial role in bringing Mitchell to justice.
