Armed Cocaine Trafficker Sentenced to 10+ Years
Markel Brown, 20, of Maple Hill, North Carolina, was sentenced to 126 months in prison for his role in an armed cocaine trafficking operation in Eastern North Carolina.
According to court documents and law enforcement, on August 13, 2019, Brown was stopped by a Robeson County Sheriff’s Officer during a traffic stop. A search of the vehicle revealed over 1 kilogram of cocaine, a .22 caliber handgun with altered serial numbers, and $8,992 in cash.
Further investigation uncovered that Brown was responsible for distributing over 1.5 kilograms of cocaine, 380 grams of heroin, 79 grams of a heroin/fentanyl mixture, and 70 grams of methamphetamine between December 2018 and September 2019.
Brown’s sentencing is the result of Operation Ahab’s Harpoon, a multi-agency Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation. OCDETF targets high-level drug traffickers and organized crime groups using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven approach.
U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan handed down the sentence after a thorough review of the evidence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Severo and Charity Wilson, with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Jacksonville Police Department, and the Roberson and Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.
Brown’s sentence also includes a significant amount of time for his role in a violent altercation while in custody. On October 24, 2020, Brown was caught with homemade alcohol in his cell and struck a detention officer several times, injuring them.
The case is part of a larger effort to disrupt and dismantle organized crime groups in Eastern North Carolina. As part of this effort, the U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to holding individuals accountable for their role in these crimes.
