Lawrence Sturdivant, a 36-year-old Cuyahoga County man, committed a string of armed robberies in the Cleveland area while out on parole. Between December 5 and 11, 2021, Sturdivant terrorized employees and patrons at 10 local stores, including Walgreens Pharmacy and Family Dollar. He would enter the stores, wander around the aisles, and then point a gun at cashiers, threatening their lives and demanding money.
The violent crimes left 14 individuals traumatized, with some suffering from life-altering effects. Sturdivant’s actions were calculated and ruthless, putting the lives of innocent people at risk for his own gain.
Sturdivant pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including Use, Carry, and Brandish a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence, Interference with Commerce by Robbery, and Felon in Possession of Ammunition. On May 5, U.S. District Court Judge J. Philip Calabrese sentenced him to 352 months (29.3 years) in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
The sentence brings a sense of relief to the community, which was shaken by Sturdivant’s violent crimes. U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer praised the efforts of the ATF and local police departments in bringing Sturdivant to justice, stating that the community is safer now that the serial criminal will spend decades behind bars.
