Arnold Boon, Armed Robbery, District of Columbia 2018

WASHINGTON DC – In a brazen heist, a Northwest Washington convenience store was smashed through by a stolen pick-up truck in the dead of night, and an ATM machine containing over $130,000 was hauled off by the perpetrators.

The crime occurred on January 19, 2018, at approximately 1:30 a.m., when a stolen Ford pickup truck smashed through the front of a 7-Eleven convenience store in the 200 block of Cedar Street NW. Surveillance video captured the suspects, including 33-year-old Arnold Boon, entering the store and lifting the ATM machine onto the bed of the truck.

Boon, a convicted felon, was in possession of a loaded semi-automatic pistol at the time of his arrest on March 17, 2018. He was also wearing a gold watch that fell to the ground during the robbery, which was later matched to him through DNA evidence.

U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu, Matthew J. DeSarno, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office’s Criminal Division, and Peter Newsham, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), announced the sentence, commending the work of the FBI agents and MPD officers who investigated the case.

As part of the sentence, Boon was ordered to pay over $150,000 in restitution to the owner of the money stolen and the owner of the building where the store is located. The sentence also included 7.5 years in prison and three years of supervised release.

Boon pled guilty before Judge Paul L. Friedman, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of interference with interstate commerce by robbery.

The FBI Washington Field Office’s Violent Crime Safe Streets Task Force, composed of FBI Agents and task force officers from MPD and the United States Capital Police, worked cooperatively and in partnership with the Capital Region law enforcement community in investigating the case.
