Defendant Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murder of Local Artist
A Maryland man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release for his role in the brutal murder of a local artist in Washington D.C. in 2017.
El Hadji Toure, 30, formerly of Laurel, Md., was sentenced by the Honorable Juliet McKenna in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Toure was found guilty by a jury in March 2019 of 13 charges, including first-degree murder while armed, first-degree sexual abuse while armed, kidnapping while armed, and credit card fraud.
According to the government’s evidence, on March 21, 2017, officers with the Metropolitan Police Department found the body of Corrina Mehiel, 34, of Burnsville, N.C., in a rowhouse in the 600 block of 14th Street NE. Mehiel had been staying in the sublet basement apartment while in Washington for a couple of weeks working on an art show at the Corcoran Gallery at George Washington University.
Toure broke into the residence, kidnapping and sexually assaulting Mehiel, stabbing her multiple times, and stealing her belongings, including her car and debit card. Surveillance video showed Toure using Mehiel’s debit card at ATMs and DNA evidence linked him to the crime.
The government commended the work of the Metropolitan Police Department and other agencies that assisted in the investigation, including the Metro Transit Police Department and the District of Columbia Department of Forensic Sciences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office also acknowledged the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeffrey Nestler and Jessi Brooks, who investigated and prosecuted the case.
Corrina Mehiel’s family and friends have expressed relief that justice has been served. ‘This sentence brings some closure to our family and friends, but we will never forget Corrina and the impact she had on our lives,’ said a family member.
