Bus Stop Attack Lands Woman in Jail
A woman’s life will never be the same after a brutal attack at a Northwest Washington bus stop. Camille Covington, 34, was found guilty of aggravated assault while armed for slashing a victim’s face and neck with a knife.
According to prosecutors, Covington violently attacked the victim, a Hispanic woman, at a bus stop near Truesdell Elementary School on October 31, 2016. The victim, who was headed to English-language classes, was bumped into by Covington on the sidewalk before being attacked with a knife.
During the assault, Covington yelled several times, ‘I don’t like Hispanic Women.’ The victim’s permanent injuries include a significant amount of blood loss and scarring on her face. When a passerby intervened, Covington threatened him with a knife.
The jury convicted Covington of assault with a dangerous weapon for threatening the passerby and for her initial attack on the victim. Covington will be detained in jail until sentencing on August 16, 2019.
U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu commended the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Police Department for their investigation. She also acknowledged the hard work of her team, including Litigation Technology Specialist William Henderson and Victim/Witness Service Coordinator Katina Adams-Washington.
The case serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by women in public places. The community can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served in this heinous crime.
