Thomas Schropp, Arson, Mail and Wire Fraud, Nebraska 2008

Omaha Man Convicted of Arson, Mail and Wire Fraud

Thomas Schropp, 52, of Omaha, Nebraska, has been convicted of arson, mail and wire fraud. A jury found him guilty after a two-week trial in United States District Court.

The Honorable Joseph F. Bataillon, Senior United States District Judge, presided over the case. Schropp faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison for the arson conviction and up to 20 years for the mail and wire fraud convictions. Sentencing has been set for May 1, 2015.

According to evidence presented at trial, Schropp hired an individual to burn down his business, PK Manufacturing in Nashville, Nebraska, in the fall of 2008. He then filed an insurance claim for approximately $4,000,000.00 for the loss. PK Manufacturing, a manufacturer of agricultural sprayers, was insolvent and in dire financial straits at the time of the fire, owing approximately $5,000,000.00 to various banks.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution’s case relied heavily on the evidence gathered by these agencies.

While the exact motives behind Schropp’s actions remain unclear, it is evident that he stood to gain a substantial financial windfall from the arson and subsequent insurance payout.

The conviction of Thomas Schropp serves as a reminder of the severity of these crimes and the consequences that come with them. As the investigation and prosecution of such cases continue, it is crucial that the public remains vigilant and aware of the risks associated with arson and insurance fraud.

The sentencing of Schropp on May 1, 2015, will mark the culmination of this case. The Grimy Times will continue to provide updates on this and other high-profile cases.
