New Orleans, LA – In a crushing blow to the city’s violent crime epidemic, 22-year-old Ashton Causey was sentenced to 210 months in federal prison on multiple drug and firearms charges, the Department of Justice announced.

Causey, a resident of Orleans Parish, was handed the harsh sentence on May 7, 2024, following a guilty plea to six counts of the indictment pending against him. The charges included illegal possession of a machinegun, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and fentanyl, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Causey’s conviction stems from a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the New Orleans Police Department, the Louisiana State Police, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu, Jr. of the Narcotics Unit.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country. The initiative brings together all levels of law enforcement and community organizations to foster trust, prevent violence, and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.

As part of his sentence, Causey was also ordered to pay a mandatory $600 special assessment fee and serve a term of three years of supervised release upon his release from prison. The harsh sentence sends a clear message that the Justice Department will not tolerate violent crime and narcotics trafficking in Louisiana.
