Braudio Mendoza, 33, of Atlanta, Georgia, is going away for a long stretch—235 months, to be exact—after being sentenced late yesterday in Charlotte, North Carolina, for his role in a sprawling methamphetamine trafficking ring. The federal judge didn’t flinch, handing down more than 19 years behind bars followed by five years of supervised release for the conviction on two counts of possession with intent to distribute.
Court records lay bare the scope of the operation: from at least 2018 through March 2019, Mendoza served as a key supply source, funneling massive quantities of high-purity meth—commonly known as “ice”—from Georgia into Western North Carolina. Law enforcement identified him as a central node in the network, coordinating deliveries with precision and profit in mind. Over the course of the investigation, authorities tied him to the trafficking of more than 4.5 kilograms of the drug.
The case against Mendoza was part of the wide-reaching Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) probe dubbed “Dixie Crystal,” an initiative that’s dismantled drug networks across the Southeast since 2015. To date, the investigation has led to the prosecution of over 200 individuals linked to meth trafficking operations responsible for flooding communities with millions of dollars in narcotics.
“Dixie Crystal” has yielded staggering results: law enforcement has seized over 20 kilograms of crystal meth, $500,000 in cash, dozens of firearms, and other assets tied to the drug trade. The operation highlights the federal government’s aggressive stance on organized drug rings exploiting regional corridors to distribute poison under the radar.
Mendoza pleaded guilty on February 22, 2019, and has remained in federal custody since. He’ll soon be transferred to a Bureau of Prisons facility once designated. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Kaufman, who pushed for accountability in a case emblematic of the deadly pipeline from southern producers to Appalachian markets.
The investigation was led by ICE-Homeland Security Investigations, with boots on the ground from a coalition of local and state forces: the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Gastonia Police, Gaston County Police, Huntersville PD, Mooresville PD, Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, Davie County Sheriff’s Office, Mocksville PD, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. Their collaboration underscores the layered response needed to crush entrenched drug operations.
