Jawuan Donte Thomas, a 23-year-old Texas man, attempted to rob an automated teller machine (ATM) in Riverton, Utah on December 17, 2024. Thomas and his co-conspirators jammed the ATM, waiting for a technician to arrive and repair it. When the technician arrived, Thomas demanded the money, but FBI agents, who were staged near the location, thwarted the robbery and captured Thomas.
Thomas pleaded guilty to attempted bank robbery on June 26, 2025, and bank robbery on May 12, 2026. He was sentenced to 57 months in prison and three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $205,080 in restitution. The sentence was imposed by Senior U.S. District Court Judge Tena Campbell.
While the Utah case was pending, it was discovered that Thomas had also been charged with bank robbery in the Southern District of Ohio. The Ohio case was transferred to Utah for disposition. Thomas admitted to successfully robbing an ATM in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.
The foiled ATM robbery in Utah was the result of a coordinated effort by law enforcement, who had been tracking Thomas and his co-conspirators. The FBI agents were able to capture Thomas immediately, and he was found to be in possession of a screwdriver at the time of his arrest.
