Avon Man Charged With Structuring Cash Deposits

A 57-year-old Avon man is facing federal charges for allegedly structuring cash deposits into a financial institution to evade reporting requirements.

Larry T. Chuppa, a resident of Avon, Ohio, was charged with one count of structuring cash deposits into a financial institution in order to evade bank reporting requirements, said Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

According to court records, Chuppa made a series of cash deposits at Fifth Third Bank between December 2011 and March 2012 for the purpose of evading reporting requirements.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges that Chuppa’s actions were a deliberate attempt to avoid triggering the bank’s reporting requirements, which are in place to prevent money laundering and other financial crimes.

An information is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, said officials.

The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Perry D. Mastrocola, following an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation.

Chuppa’s alleged actions highlight the ongoing threat of financial crimes in our community, said authorities. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to root out these types of crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.

As this case moves forward, the public is reminded that financial institutions are required to report cash transactions exceeding $10,000 in order to prevent money laundering and other financial crimes.
