A 38-year-old Bahamian national, Shelton Thompson, who was wanted for murder in the Bahamas and had been living in the US illegally since August 2024, has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as an illegal alien in South Florida. Thompson was caught during a traffic stop, and a subsequent search of his residence uncovered a firearm that he was prohibited from possessing under federal law. The case is a high-priority for law enforcement due to Thompson’s violent history and illegal presence in the US.
The guilty plea is the result of an investigation led by the FBI, with assistance from US Border Patrol and US Coast Guard. The case is being prosecuted by the Border and Immigration Crimes Enforcement (BICE) Section, which was created to strengthen South Florida’s border security posture and enforce federal immigration law.
US Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones warned that individuals who enter or remain in the country unlawfully and illegally possess firearms will be investigated and prosecuted, and that the US will use every lawful tool available to protect communities from dangerous offenders. Thompson faces up to 15 years in federal prison, and his sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after considering the US Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The BICE Section brings together narcotics, immigration, fraud, and violent-crime expertise to dismantle transnational smuggling networks operating through the region. The case highlights the importance of vigilant law enforcement in South Florida, where the proximity to international borders makes it a high-risk area for illegal activity.
