NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Jarrett Hall, 33, of Baker, Louisiana, is facing serious federal charges after allegedly being caught with a firearm despite a prior felony conviction. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana announced Hall’s indictment on March 23, 2024, sending a clear message that illegal gun possession won’t be tolerated.
According to court documents, Hall knowingly possessed a Colt Model Commander, a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, on December 8, 2023. This possession is a direct violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8) – federal laws prohibiting felons from owning firearms. Details of the initial encounter leading to the discovery of the weapon haven’t been released, but investigators have built a case they believe will stand up in court.
If convicted, Hall is looking at a maximum sentence of 15 years behind bars. The potential penalties don’t stop there; he could also be slapped with a fine of up to $250,000, and face up to three years of supervised release after serving his time. A mandatory special assessment fee of $100 will also be levied if he’s found guilty. This isn’t just about the gun; it’s about a pattern of disregard for the law, according to federal prosecutors.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans was quick to emphasize that an indictment is not a declaration of guilt. “This is merely a charging document,” he stated, “and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.” The legal process will now unfold, giving Hall the opportunity to defend himself against these serious allegations. The government will need to present compelling evidence to secure a conviction.
This case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the nation. PSN brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement, along with community organizations, to address the root causes of crime and create safer neighborhoods. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting community programs, and prioritizing strategic enforcement.
The investigation into Hall’s alleged illegal firearm possession was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Briana Williams of the Narcotics Unit is leading the prosecution, tasked with bringing this case to a just conclusion.
