North Attleboro Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing from Disabled Man
BOSTON – In a shocking case of financial exploitation, Wendy Mairle, 49, of North Attleboro, pleaded guilty to stealing $32,439 in government benefits from a disabled man whose financial affairs she was managing.
Mairle was charged in a felony information in April 2015 and is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 18, 2015, by U.S. District Court Senior Judge Mark L. Wolf.
According to the indictment, Mairle was appointed as the representative payee for the monthly Social Security disability payments of a man who was in full-time residential treatment at a local hospital in 2012. As a representative payee, Mairle was required to spend the Social Security payments on the man’s behalf. However, from May 2012 to May 2014, Mairle received $45,255 from the Social Security Administration (SSA), but she only spent $12,816 on the disabled man’s behalf and spent the remaining $32,439 on herself, including a vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
This case was brought as part of an ongoing effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in partnership with the SSA to investigate and prosecute fraud pertaining to Social Security disability benefits.
Mairle, who was appointed as the representative payee for the disabled man, was required to spend the Social Security payments on his behalf. Instead, she used the funds for her own personal expenses, including a vacation to Myrtle Beach.
The victim, a disabled man who was in full-time residential treatment at a local hospital, had no knowledge of Mairle’s scheme and was left with insufficient funds for his basic needs.
Mairle’s actions are a stark reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals, including those with disabilities, from financial exploitation.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to holding accountable those who take advantage of vulnerable individuals and to ensuring that those who are entrusted with managing the financial affairs of others do so with integrity and transparency.
