FRESNO, Calif. — The grim shadow of the law has fallen upon Fabian Rodriguez, 35, a Bakersfield native, as he faces a federal indictment for his dastardly dance with drugs and deadly firearms.
According to the U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert, a two-count felony charge has been leveled against Rodriguez, who is accused of being a felon in possession of ammunition and for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The evidence against him is as cold as steel: three boxes of 9mm ammunition and a substantial amount of the deadly drug.
Rodriguez’s criminal past, which includes convictions that warranted prison time exceeding one year, makes his current predicament all the more dire. If convicted, the 35-year-old could be looking at up to 20 years behind bars for the methamphetamine charge alone, not to mention a fine of $1 million. The ammunition charge carries its own severe penalty—a maximum sentence of 15 years and a quarter of a million dollars in fines.
This investigation was a joint effort by the FBI and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, a partnership that aims to keep the streets of California’s Bakersfield safe from such criminal elements. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chan Hee Chu will be leading the prosecution of this case.
As part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which unites law enforcement and communities in the fight against violent crime, Rodriguez’s indictment is a direct strike against those who would threaten the peace of Bakersfield’s neighborhoods.
The charges against Rodriguez are merely allegations at this stage. The accused maintains his innocence until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, as he will have his day in court to defend himself.
