BALTIMORE, MD – Tony Derrell Bunch, 32, of Baltimore, is trading city streets for federal prison cells after receiving a 110-month sentence today for a brazen string of bank robberies that terrorized the Baltimore area in the spring of 2014. U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander handed down the sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, effectively exiling Bunch for over nine years.
The case, a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, detailed how Bunch systematically targeted banks across Baltimore and Anne Arundel County. According to the Department of Justice, Bunch’s spree began in late March 2014 and continued through mid-April. His method was chillingly consistent: approaching tellers with a handwritten note claiming he possessed a firearm and threatening violence if his demands for cash weren’t met.
The tally of Bunch’s criminal enterprise included the March 25, 2014, robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank on York Road, where he made off with $4,029.01. He then struck the Bay Bank in Hanover on April 4th, absconding with $2,000. Just ten days later, on April 14th, Bunch targeted another Wells Fargo branch, this time on Eastern Avenue in Baltimore, netting $3,333. The total haul from his three-week crime wave: $9,362.01.
But Bunch wasn’t as slick as he thought. The crucial break in the case came after the April 4th robbery at the Bay Bank. Bunch carelessly left the threatening note behind. Forensic examiners, dusting for prints, managed to lift a clear fingerprint from the demand note. That print was subsequently matched to a known print on file belonging to Tony Derrell Bunch, sealing his fate.
United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein, along with top officials from the FBI, Baltimore Police Department, Anne Arundel County Police Department, Howard County Police Department, and Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby, jointly announced the sentence. Rosenstein specifically lauded the dedication of the investigative teams, recognizing the collaborative spirit that brought Bunch to justice.
Assistant United States Attorney P. Michael Cunningham, who skillfully prosecuted the case, was also commended for his work. While the 110-month sentence won’t recoup the stolen funds, it sends a clear message: armed bank robbery won’t be tolerated in Baltimore, and those who attempt it will face serious consequences.
