Bank Fraudster Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison
Baltimore, MD – Nicole Jenise Stevenson, a 31-year-old Baltimore resident, has been sentenced to three years in prison for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett on today.
According to the plea agreement, Stevenson was previously sentenced to two years in prison in 2007 for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. However, she resumed her supervised release in 2009 and was prohibited from opening any new accounts without the approval of her probation officer. Despite this, Stevenson opened multiple new accounts without permission and wrote checks on them, even though she never made any legitimate deposits.
One of these accounts was opened in the name of ‘Nicole Taylor’ using the social security number of ‘HH’, without the knowledge or consent of her supervising probation officer or ‘HH’. Stevenson made an initial deposit of $350, but immediately withdrew $300 and proceeded to write over $2,000 in checks on the account. The account was eventually closed by the bank with an overdraft amount of $2,260.
Stevenson also opened a credit account with Shaws without permission, which was charged off in July 2011 with an outstanding balance of $2072. Her probation officer made several attempts to contact her, but Stevenson failed to appear for meetings and eventually had an arrest warrant issued for her on September 12, 2011.
Stevenson was sentenced to 18 months in prison for violating her supervised release, which will be served concurrently with her three-year sentence. She was also ordered to pay restitution of $24,944.42. The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein and other law enforcement officials.
Stevenson’s history of bank fraud and identity theft has cost her victims thousands of dollars. Her three-year sentence is a reminder that such crimes will not be tolerated and that those who commit them will face serious consequences.
The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service and the U.S. Probation Office, with assistance from the Baltimore County Police Department. The U.S. Marshal’s Office was also involved in the arrest and prosecution of Stevenson.
Stevenson’s sentence serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar crimes. Bank fraud and identity theft are serious offenses that can have devastating consequences for victims. We urge anyone who may be a victim of such crimes to come forward and report them to the authorities.
