Bank Robber Caught in Memphis
A brazen bank robbery in Cordova, Tennessee, has led to the arrest of a 26-year-old Memphis man and his alleged accomplice. Matthew Schweitzer, 26, is charged with one count of bank robbery in connection with the November 4, 2013, robbery of the Suntrust Bank located inside the Kroger Store at 676 N. Germantown Parkway.
According to the facts alleged in the criminal complaint, the lone male suspect entered the Kroger Store at approximately 1:43 p.m. and demanded money from a bank teller. He fled with the money and was later identified through a Crime Stopper tip as Schweitzer.
Schweitzer was arrested without incident on November 5, 2013, by members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force.
While in custody, Schweitzer confessed to the robbery of the Suntrust Bank and implicated his alleged accomplice, Derek Wurth, 25, in the October 11, 2013, robbery of the First Tennessee Bank located inside the Kroger Store at 9025 U.S. Highway 64.
Wurth was arrested on November 6, 2013, in Oxford, Mississippi. The case was investigated by the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Lorraine Craig is representing the government.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaints are merely accusations, and the defendants are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The incident highlights the importance of community involvement in solving crimes. The Crime Stopper tip that led to Schweitzer’s arrest demonstrates the power of vigilant citizens in keeping their communities safe.
