Murfreesboro, TN – Melinda Boisseau, a 37-year-old resident of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been sentenced to two years behind bars followed by two years of supervised release for masterminding an elaborate scheme that involved the theft and misuse of personal identification to file fraudulent tax returns.

The sentence was handed down on January 19, 2017, by David Rivera, U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. Boisseau pleaded guilty on May 10, 2016, to charges of aggravated identity theft and filing false claims in tax returns.

According to the statement of facts, between June 2010 and February 2011, Boisseau utilized stolen personal identification information along with forged employer and wage details to file up to 66 fraudulent tax returns. The fraudulent activities resulted in a total of $53,289 that Boisseau attempted to pocket.

Investigations into the case were conducted by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie N. Toussaint prosecuted the charges against Boisseau.

In addition to her prison sentence, Boisseau has been ordered to pay $53,289 in restitution directly to the IRS. This case serves as a stark reminder of the growing threat of identity theft and the meticulous nature of financial crimes that can ensnare unsuspecting victims.
