GEORGE RONZELL FYKE, a 40-year-old resident of Woodbury, Tennessee, has stood before the justice system, pleading guilty to serious charges that include aggravated identity theft and theft of government funds. This grim revelation was made public by Jack Smith, the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee.
According to court documents, Fyke is accused of a despicable scheme where he stole the names and social security numbers of deceased relatives and fellow inmates at the Montgomery County Jail. He then used this information to file fraudulent income tax returns. The deceitful act resulted in over $56,000 being released by the Department of Treasury into unlawful tax refunds.
After his release from jail, Fyke took it a step further, forging signatures of stolen identities and depositing refund checks into his own bank accounts. This audacious maneuver allowed him to bypass any red flags that might have been raised had the real owners claimed their refunds first.
In a plea agreement, Fyke has admitted to his crimes and agreed to face the full brunt of justice. He now faces 48 months in federal prison and is required to pay restitution to the IRS for his fraudulent activities. Moreover, he stands to face additional periods of supervised release and monetary penalties as part of his sentence.
The court date for sentencing has been set for August 14, 2017. This case has been meticulously investigated by the IRS-Criminal Investigation division and is being prosecuted with fervor by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould.
With this conviction, it’s another stark reminder of the lengths some will go to in order to profit from others’ misfortunes, a chilling precedent that leaves the community on edge. Fyke’s actions have not only affected his own fate but also the livelihoods of those whose identities he exploited.
