John Donald Butler, Bank Robbery, Ohio 2026

⏱ 2 min read

A brazen daylight bank heist went down on March 30 at the Key Bank on Miamisburg Centerville Road in Dayton, Ohio. John Donald Butler, a 62-year-old man with a long history of bank robberies, walked into the bank dressed as a construction worker at approximately 2:45pm. He passed a note to the teller and verbally ordered them to empty the top drawer, threatening not to include dye packs with the cash. After making off with over $9,000, Butler fled the scene.

Butler’s freedom was short-lived, as law enforcement responded quickly to the scene and obtained security images of him. They also used license plate readers to track his vehicle before and after the robbery. Approximately three hours after the heist, officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested Butler, finding cash, drugs, and the robbery note on his person or in his vehicle.

Butler’s guilty plea is his 21st federal bank robbery conviction, with previous convictions in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina. He faces up to 20 years in prison for the crime. The case was announced by United States Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II, FBI Special Agent in Charge Jason Cromartie, and Moraine Police Chief Craig Richardson.

The investigation and arrest were a result of swift collaboration between law enforcement agencies. Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth L. McCormick is representing the United States in this case, which will be sentenced at a future hearing.
