A high-stakes standoff ended in tragedy yesterday when Kelly Vern Mark Swoboda, a 49-year-old bank robber, was shot and killed by a Portland Police Bureau officer near Wilson High School. Swoboda, a convicted felon, was wanted in connection with a string of bank robberies.
According to law enforcement, Swoboda was a wanted federal fugitive based on a supervised release violation issued in connection with his prior bank robbery conviction. In 2006, he was convicted of a bank robbery in Portland and received a 70-month prison sentence. His supervised release commenced last March, but a supervised release violation warrant was issued in November of last year.
The United States Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force had been actively trying to locate Swoboda since the warrant was filed. In a stunning twist, a federal indictment was filed yesterday, alleging that Swoboda committed three bank robberies: November 22, 2013, at the NW Priority Federal Credit Union in Milwaukie, Oregon; December 6, 2013, at the Cutting Edge Federal Credit Union in Milwaukie, Oregon; and December 21, 2013, at the Unitus Community Credit Union in Portland, Oregon.
Details of the shootout are still sketchy, but sources close to the investigation confirm that Swoboda was killed in the exchange of gunfire. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
