Former Office Manager Admits to Stealing from Church
WASHINGTON D.C. – In a shocking turn of events, Barry Tillman, 59, the former office manager of the Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church and its affiliated non-profit organization City Gate, pleaded guilty to wire fraud in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Tillman, who worked at the church from 2008 to 2013, processed salary payments to himself through both direct deposit and salary checks, knowing he was receiving his salary by check. This resulted in him being paid twice, and he kept a total of $153,754 of these electronic transfers for himself.
The church and its non-profit organization provided support for youth through after-school and summer educational programs, as well as supplied meals and job training to low-income families.
Tillman’s actions were uncovered through the diligent work of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The U.S. Attorney’s Office commended the efforts of Criminal Investigator Juan Juarez, and expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by Criminal Investigator Stephen Cohen, Paralegal Specialist Jessica Mundi, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Julia Jarrett.
U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips announced the plea, stating that Tillman faces up to 27 months in prison and a fine of up to $95,000 under federal sentencing guidelines. He has also agreed to pay a total of $153,754 in restitution.
Tillman is scheduled to be sentenced on July 13, 2016, by the Honorable Rudolph Contreras. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in the non-profit sector.
The investigation and prosecution of this case were led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Teresa A. Howie, who worked tirelessly to bring the perpetrator to justice.
As a result of Tillman’s actions, the church and its non-profit organization have suffered significant financial losses. However, the U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to ensuring that those who engage in financial crimes are held accountable for their actions.
