Daniel Hines, Bath Salt Distribution Conspiracy, Maine 2011

Bangor Resident Sentenced to Almost Six Years for Bath Salt Distribution Conspiracy

A 38-year-old local man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison and three years of supervised release for his role in a conspiracy to distribute ‘bath salts’.

According to court records, Daniel Hines obtained MDPV, a chemical compound commonly referred to as ‘bath salts’ or ‘monkey dust,’ from other members of the conspiracy and traded, sold or otherwise distributed it to others.

The conspiracy, which involved 18 defendants, distributed large quantities of MDPV in Penobscot, Aroostook and Knox counties between April and December 2011.

Assistant United States Attorney Joel B. Casey said in a statement that the case was investigated by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency with assistance from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Brewer and Bangor Police Departments.

Hines is one of several conspirators who have pleaded guilty to their roles in the distribution of the highly potent stimulant.

Co-conspirator Ryan Ellis, who previously pleaded guilty, awaits sentencing. The U.S. Attorney’s office has not disclosed any information on potential sentences for other conspirators.

MDPV, a synthetic stimulant, has been linked to numerous reports of violent behavior and erratic activity.
