Willie Smith, Robbery, Kansas 2023

WICHITA, KAN – Wichita’s Willie Smith, 38, has pleaded guilty to robbing three local stores with a BB gun. U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister confirmed that Smith admitted his guilt in Monday’s plea hearing.

The defendant’s treacherous tactics began in 2018 when he robbed the QuikTrip store at 1532 S. Seneca, brandishing what appeared to be a revolver. His next move was the Express Mart at 565 S. Market, where he pulled out the same imitation firearm. His final act of thievery was at Pete’s Liquor at 332 W. Harry, where he again displayed the menacing BB gun.

During a subsequent search of Smith’s apartment, authorities uncovered the black BB gun they believe was used in all three robberies. The court will consider these as relevant conduct during sentencing for the crimes committed at QuikTrip, Express Mart, and Pete’s Liquor.

Sentencing is set for August 26, where Smith faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. McAllister commended the Wichita Police Department and Assistant U.S. Attorney David Lind for their diligent work on the case.

Smith’s conviction for one count of robbery comes as a stark reminder of the danger posed by individuals who use imitation firearms to commit serious crimes. His sentencing will serve as a cautionary tale for others considering similar actions.
