NEW ORLEANS, LA – A 26-year-old New Orleans resident, CHRISTIAN GUITY, is headed to federal prison for over seven years after a traffic stop uncovered a cache of illegal drugs and a fully automatic weapon. GUITY was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Court Judge Jane Triche Milazzo to 87 months imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release and a $300 mandatory assessment fee.
The case stems from a July 29, 2021, traffic stop conducted by the New Orleans Police Department. Officers pulled over the vehicle GUITY was riding in, and two other occupants immediately bolted on foot. While pursuing the fleeing individuals, officers secured GUITY, who was in the passenger seat. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a significant quantity of illegal narcotics, alongside a machine gun – a weapon strictly prohibited under federal law.
GUITY was indicted on four counts. He was found guilty on Counts One, Two, and Three, specifically charged with possession with intent to distribute dangerous substances (a violation of Title 21, United States Code Sections 841(a)(1), (b)(1)(C), and (b)(1)(D)), possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime (Title 18, United States Code Section 924(c)), and illegal possession of a machine gun (Title 18, United States Code Section 922(o)). The fourth count was not specified in the official release.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans highlighted the case as a key component of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement at all levels and the communities they serve. The Department of Justice recently reinforced PSN with a strategy focused on building community trust, supporting local violence prevention groups, and prioritizing strategic enforcement.
Evans praised the collaborative efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Louisiana State Police, and the New Orleans Police Department in securing the conviction. Assistant United States Attorney Inga Petrovich, of the Violent Crime Unit, led the prosecution of the case, demonstrating a commitment to tackling serious criminal activity in the region.
The sentencing of GUITY serves as a stark reminder that those involved in drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession will face severe consequences under federal law. The ATF’s involvement underscores the agency’s ongoing commitment to disrupting the flow of illegal weapons and dismantling criminal networks operating within Louisiana and beyond. This case is another win for the joint forces working to reclaim the streets of New Orleans from violent offenders.
