BEAUMONT, TX – In a chilling turn of events, Rogelio Arellano Torres, 19, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for carjacking. The young man admitted to the crime during a hearing before United States Judge Marcia Crone.
The harrowing incident took place on June 24, 2012, when Torres forcefully confined a woman in her own vehicle at knife-point within the parking lot of Pappadeaux’s Restaurant in Beaumont. The terrified victim was coerced into withdrawing cash from her account at a nearby bank ATM, where Torres demanded the money.
After obtaining the funds, Torres forced the woman from her car and made off with her belongings, including her purse and cell phone. The brazen act left the community in shock and authorities on high alert.
Torres faces a daunting sentence of up to 15 years behind bars for his despicable actions. A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled by the court.
This case is the result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Beaumont Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Joseph R. Batte leading the prosecution.
United States Attorney John M. Bales emphasized the severity of carjacking as a federal offense, underscoring the commitment to bring such criminals to justice.
