CONCORD – In a major blow to the fentanyl trade, 29-year-old Belmont resident Samuel Morris has pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy to traffic the deadly drug. United States Attorney Scott W. Murray announced today’s stunning admission.
Morris, according to court documents and statements in court, was regularly obtaining fentanyl from sources in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and selling it across the state line into New Hampshire. During an ongoing investigation involving court-authorized wiretaps, DEA agents and task force officers caught Morris red-handed on March 9, 2018.
That day, agents observed Morris pick up drugs from a known dealer and later called his source to question the packaging. ‘The drugs were wrapped in “green paper,”’ the source told him. It was this lead that led to a New Hampshire State Trooper pulling over Morris’s vehicle. Inside, officers found approximately 148 grams of fentanyl packaged as described.
Over the course of the investigation, Morris is alleged to have purchased roughly 1320 grams of fentanyl. His sentencing is set for September 10, 2019, where he faces significant penalties for his crime.
Morris’s plea comes as a stark reminder of the dangers of interstate drug trafficking in New Hampshire. ‘The harmful results of fentanyl trafficking are evident daily,’ U.S. Attorney Murray said. ‘Those who bring this poison into our state should understand the substantial consequences of their actions.’
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving numerous law enforcement agencies, including the DEA, New Hampshire State Police, Massachusetts State Police, and the United States Marshals Service, among others. Assistant United States Attorneys Georgiana L. Konesky, Seth R. Aframe, and Debra M. Walsh are prosecuting the case.
This operation was supported by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), which provides federal funding to agencies involved in combating major drug trafficking organizations.
