Lawrence, Massachusetts – In a grim turn of justice, Sergio Martinez, 30, has been sentenced to 45 years in federal prison for his role as the head of a major fentanyl trafficking organization. The sentence was announced by United States Attorney Scott W. Murray. Alongside the lengthy term, Martinez faces forfeiture of $2,000,000 in cash and three houses in Lawrence.
Martinez’s guilty plea came after the sixth day of his jury trial, which began on October 1, 2019. Prosecutors presented evidence that Martinez’s operation sold fentanyl across various New England states, with a significant portion of sales in New Hampshire. Customers identified the organization by the moniker ‘Brian’ and distributors recognized New Hampshire license plates as markers for their clientele.
Testimony revealed the intricate workings of the ring: ‘small phones’ at ‘the base’, dispatchers directing customers to local distributors, and a more exclusive ‘big phone’ for larger orders. The organization’s sales strategy was aggressive, with distributors selling 200-gram bags of fentanyl for $30 per gram, raking in $6,000 per transaction.
Martinez’s operation targeted three distinct sets of customers: small-scale buyers served by the base, mid-level purchasers who were directed to meet distributors, and high-end clients who received direct deliveries from the organization. The trial also exposed Martinez’s connections with a Mexican fentanyl supplier in Sinaloa, Mexico, indicating his involvement in a larger global drug trade.
Investigations yielded over 12 kilograms of fentanyl from the Martinez network. One intercepted call featured Martinez emphasizing the importance of quality control and his own role in moving substantial quantities of the drug across state lines.
Martinez’s sentence sends a strong message about the consequences of leading such a dangerous criminal enterprise. His sentence is a stark reminder of the devastating impact fentanyl trafficking has on communities throughout New England.
