NEWARK, N.J. – Jeffrey Laino, 37, of Washington Township, New Jersey, is facing serious federal charges after being arrested today for allegedly distributing images of child sexual abuse. The arrest, announced by U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito, caps a disturbing investigation that spanned over a year and involved both peer-to-peer file sharing and direct contact with a minor victim.
Laino was arrested at his residence and charged by complaint with one count of distributing child pornography. He made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy L. The case began to unfold in January 2019 when an undercover law enforcement officer monitoring a publicly available peer-to-peer (P2P) program detected the sharing of illicit files originating from an internet address traced directly to Laino’s home. The investigation took a chilling turn in February 2019 when authorities received information regarding a victim in Ohio. The victim reported being contacted on Snapchat by an individual using the screen name “Jeff L.”, who claimed to be from New Jersey. “Jeff L.” confessed to obtaining nude pictures of the victim – taken when she was between 14 and 15 years of age – by downloading them from the internet. Crucially, the IP address associated with the “Jeff L.” Snapchat account was linked to an account registered at Laino’s residence, coinciding with the timing of the disturbing online conversations.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that the charges against Laino are merely accusations at this stage. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
