Bernard Caston, a 54-year-old Jackson man, has pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in federal court.

Caston will be sentenced on October 1, 2024, under the Armed Career Criminal Act, which requires a minimum of 15 years in federal prison followed by 5 years of supervised release.

The charges against Caston stem from a February 24, 2018, incident in which he and Fredrick Harper, 44, stole four firearms from another individual. The two men were stopped by a Jackson police officer when they were driving to another location to sell the stolen guns.

Caston’s prior felony convictions include a federal armed bank robbery conviction and multiple house burglary convictions in Hinds County.

Harper, Caston’s co-defendant, previously pleaded guilty in federal court to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was sentenced to serve 188 months in prison.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Jackson Police Department. U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee and Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the ATF made the announcement.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amber Jones and Dave Fulcher are prosecuting the case. Caston’s sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
