Defendant Sentenced to 178 Months for Methamphetamine Trafficking

A Harlan County man has been sentenced to 178 months in prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation. Bethel Stewart, 61, of Cawood, Kentucky, was sentenced on Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Robert Wier for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

According to court documents, law enforcement began surveillance on Stewart’s residence after receiving community complaints of drug trafficking and a tip that he was in possession of a large quantity of methamphetamine. On January 19, 2022, law enforcement searched Stewart’s home and discovered approximately 300 grams of methamphetamine, which Stewart intended to distribute.

Under federal law, Stewart must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence. Upon his release from prison, he will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for five years.

The investigation was conducted by the DEA, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Parman is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States. Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and J. Todd Scott, Special Agent in Charge, DEA, Louisville Field Division, jointly announced the sentence.
