GRIM FINDINGS IN BIG TIMBER: A local drug lord faces a harsh sentence after being caught with a massive stash of methamphetamine.
James Karl Ellis, 38, from Big Timber, Montana, has been sentenced to 36 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release. The charges stem from the possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine that authorities uncovered during their investigation.
The case took a dramatic turn when law enforcement stumbled upon a video showing Ellis extracting what appeared to be drugs from his garage’s large safe. This discovery led to a search warrant for his residence, where approximately 300 grams of meth were found.
Ellis pleaded guilty in February 2025, and the sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Sweetgrass County Sheriff’s Office and ATF agents.
This conviction is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across communities. Launched in May 2021, PSN focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, and setting strategic enforcement priorities.
