BOSTON – The gritty streets of Leominster were hit with a shockwave yesterday as 36-year-old Brian Cook was apprehended and charged with one count of possession of child pornography. Cook, a resident of the city, now faces up to 20 years in federal prison for allegations that he harbored explicit material depicting the abuse of minors.
Yesterday’s raid, executed by federal agents with a search warrant at Cook’s residence, uncovered several videos of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on his computer and hard drives. The seizure of laptops, hard drives, and other digital storage devices marks the beginning of an in-depth forensic examination.
Arrested without incident, Cook was ordered detained pending a hearing scheduled for this afternoon in federal court in Worcester. As the grim details unfolded, Assistant U.S. Attorney Danial E. Bennett vowed to prosecute the case with vigor, ensuring justice is served.
The charge against Cook carries significant penalties: up to 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and supervised release that could span a lifetime. Sentences are dictated by federal district court judges under U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks of the FBI Boston Division announced the charges, noting the collaborative efforts of Leominster and Westford Police Departments. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a justice department initiative combating child exploitation since 2006.
The public is encouraged to report any information related to this case by calling 617-748-3274. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
