Billings, MT – In a gritty blow against drug trafficking in the region, Tirrell Lewis, 45, has been sentenced to 168 months in federal prison following a guilty plea for distributing drugs and possessing a firearm.
Lewis entered his plea in February 2025 to charges of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The sentence also includes four years of supervised release, as announced by U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme.
The crime spree began on November 3, 2023, when law enforcement was tipped off about gunshots near a residential address in Billings. Initially dismissed as fireworks, the discovery of two spent rifle casings and Lewis’s presence at the scene painted a different picture. The Mustang vehicle he fled in was later found abandoned with 4 firearms, 91 rounds of ammunition, and over 16 ounces of illegal drugs.
During his arrest, Lewis had $6,216.18 on him, while the search of his vehicle uncovered an alarming cache of fentanyl and methamphetamine. His previous federal conviction rendered Lewis ineligible for firearm possession, yet he faced charges for having a handgun under his backpack.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Godfrey and investigated by the Billings Police Department, ATF, and DEA. It is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence in communities across the nation.
