GRIMY NEWS EXCLUSIVE: Two high-profile Denver gang members have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a massive fentanyl and cocaine trafficking operation. Carlos Sanford-Valdez, alias ‘Charlie Vuitton,’ received a 240-month sentence, while co-defendant Kataina Jackson-Keeling, known as ‘Tana Ten Birdz,’ was handed a 120-month term.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado detailed how Sanford-Valdez and Jackson-Keeling, members of the Crip gang and the ‘Bird Gang’ criminal network, distributed tens of thousands of fentanyl pills and cocaine in the Denver Metro area between May 2022 and April 2023.
Sanford-Valdez traveled to Arizona to acquire fentanyl, which he intended to transport back to Colorado. His associate was intercepted en route with 60,000 fentanyl pills. Sanford-Valdez also faced charges after a July 2022 stop in Arizona, where authorities recovered significant quantities of drugs and cash.
Jackson-Keeling’s involvement included mailing packages containing fentanyl from Arizona to Colorado, which were intercepted by law enforcement. The investigation also revealed an automotive shop in Denver as a key distribution point for the criminal network.
United States Attorney Peter McNeilly emphasized the impact of organized crime on the fentanyl crisis, stating, ‘These defendants trafficked tens of thousands of fentanyl pills into the Denver Metro area.’ DEA Rocky Mountain Field Division Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Pullen highlighted the agency’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks.
Sanford-Valdez has a history of prior drug and firearms convictions, while Jackson-Keeling had previously served 10 years for an aggravated robbery conviction. The coordinated efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement led to the disruption of their operation and the prevention of further harm to communities.
