Denver’s streets are no safer as two influential gang members have been handed down harsh sentences for their involvement in a massive drug trafficking ring. Carlos Sanford-Valdez, also known as ‘Charlie Vuitton,’ was sentenced to 240 months in federal prison, along with five years of supervised release, for his role in the conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and cocaine. Co-defendant Kataina Jackson-Keeling, known as ‘Tana Ten Birdz,’ received a sentence of 120 months.
According to plea agreements, the duo, along with others from the Crip gang and the so-called ‘Bird Gang,’ were selling large quantities of fentanyl and cocaine in Denver Metro area from May 2022 to April 2023. They even traveled to Arizona to obtain fentanyl pills, which they intended to transport back to Colorado.
Sanford-Valdez’s journey to prison was fraught with law enforcement scrutiny. On July 30, 2022, he flew to Arizona and attempted to bring back 60,000 fentanyl pills before being intercepted by authorities. Later that year, on August 19th, officers recovered a handgun, ammunition, cash, and more than 10,000 fentanyl pills from Sanford-Valdez’s vehicle.
Jackson-Keeling was no stranger to the justice system; he had already served 10 years for an aggravated robbery. On November 14, 2022, his package containing 10,102 fentanyl pills was intercepted by law enforcement.
Investigators tied an automotive shop in Denver to the criminal network’s activities, leading to the recovery of over 706 grams of fentanyl pills and powder during a search warrant on November 17, 2022. Sanford-Valdez was also found with 50 grams of cocaine at another location.
“This case underscores the deadly consequences of organized crime networks like the ‘Bird Gang,’ said United States Attorney Peter McNeilly. “Thanks to our combined efforts, we were able to disrupt their operation and keep these dangerous drugs off our streets.” DEA Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Pullen echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the commitment to dismantling such criminal organizations.
