Berwick Woman Busted for Yearlong SSI Scam
PORTLAND, Maine – Suzanne Hercock, a 46-year-old Berwick woman, has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Portland to Social Security fraud, a serious crime that’s left many wondering how someone could deceive the system for so long.
According to court records, Hercock lied to the Social Security Administration (SSA) about the presence of her husband, the father of her children, to fraudulently collect Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments on behalf of her kids from December 2008 to February 2020.
The scheme was uncovered after multiple benefit eligibility reviews revealed Hercock had falsely represented to the SSA that she and her husband lived separately. She failed to disclose her husband’s presence and income despite knowing it would affect her eligibility for the benefits.
Hercock’s actions are a stark reminder that Social Security fraud is a serious crime with severe consequences. The SSA’s Office of the Inspector General investigated the case, and now Hercock faces up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 followed by up to three years of supervised release.
The Court may also order Hercock to pay restitution to the SSA, a move that would be a fitting punishment for her deceitful actions. A federal district judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The people of Maine and the nation need to be assured that those who perpetrate such crimes will face justice. Hercock’s guilty plea is a step in the right direction, but it’s also a reminder that there’s still much work to be done to prevent such crimes from happening in the first place.
As the investigation unfolds, one thing is certain: Suzanne Hercock’s actions have caused damage to the very system she was supposed to trust. It’s a crime that’s left many feeling betrayed and frustrated.
Hercock’s case serves as a warning to those who would seek to deceive the system: you will be caught, and you will face the consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
