• In a move to combat the city’s gun violence, a New Orleans man has been sentenced to 37 months imprisonment for violating the Federal Gun Control Act.
Jenard Walton, 41, of New Orleans, was handed down the sentence by United States District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo. Walton will also serve three years of supervised release following his imprisonment, and pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
The charges stem from a March 19, 2024, raid on Walton’s residence, where law enforcement discovered a stash of marijuana and multiple firearms. The search warrant was executed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Slidell Police Department.
Agents found a Springfield, nine-millimeter caliber semi-automatic pistol wrapped in a towel in a kitchen cabinet, as well as a hidden compartment under a set of stairs containing a Smith and Wesson, .40 caliber pistol. The Smith and Wesson firearm was confirmed to have been stolen, and a records check revealed Walton to be a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms.
This case is part of the Department’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Dawkins of the Violent Crime Unit.
Walton’s previous conviction history includes at least five felony convictions, including a prior federal conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The total amount of marijuana seized during the raid was approximately one and a half pounds, and $37,941 in U.S. currency was found in the hidden compartment.
The Department’s violent crime reduction strategy focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
