Dean Carlin Fender, Fentanyl Distribution, Mississippi 2022

Gulfport, Miss. – In a decisive blow against the illicit drug trade in Mississippi, Dean Carlin Fender, 26, of Biloxi, has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca and Special Agent in Charge Brad L. Byerley of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced the sentence this week. Fender’s conviction stems from a tragic incident at Keesler Air Force Base, where a drug trafficking organization was implicated in the death of an airman.

Documents reveal that the organization sold counterfeit pills containing fentanyl to Emmett Bennett, who caused a fatal traffic accident on base. The investigation led to Fender, who was identified as the supplier of the deadly substance.

On September 2, 2021, DEA agents executed a controlled buy from Fender, securing 20 counterfeit Percocet tablets containing fentanyl. Fender was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 7, 2022, and entered a guilty plea on November 9, 2022.

The DEA investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Rose handling the prosecution.

This sentence sends a clear message that Mississippi will not tolerate those who deal in deadly drugs like fentanyl.
