St. Louis County Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Trafficking in Child Pornography
ST. LOUIS – James C. Astorian, 40, of St. Louis County, Missouri, will spend the next eight years in federal prison after being sentenced Monday for sharing horrific child sexual abuse material. U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Clark delivered the sentence, a direct response to Astorian’s deliberate and sickening actions.
The case unraveled after Astorian began sharing multiple images and videos containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) with an undercover officer from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, using a peer-to-peer network. A subsequent investigation revealed a sickening hoard: 6,110 images and 728 videos depicting the exploitation of children. Astorian wasn’t a passive collector; he was actively distributing this filth.
According to a government sentencing memorandum, Astorian confessed to trafficking in CSAM for approximately two years. The memorandum also chillingly noted that some of the images were “notably violent,” underscoring the depravity of the material he possessed and shared. This wasn’t a momentary lapse; it was a sustained pattern of abuse enablement.
Judge Clark didn’t stop at imprisonment. Astorian was also ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution to the victims identified in the images he collected and disseminated. While no amount of money can truly compensate for the harm inflicted, the order sends a clear message that exploiting children carries significant financial consequences.
Astorian pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis in March to one count of possession of child pornography. The investigation was a joint effort by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the St. Louis County Police Department, and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jillian Anderson successfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Astorian faced justice.
This case was brought forth as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The project aims to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse by coordinating federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders.
