Wyatt Christian Greenfield, a 19-year-old from Huxley, intentionally struck two Canada Geese with his truck in Ankeny, Iowa, on March 3, 2026. Greenfield was driving eastbound on NE 70th Avenue when he accelerated and swerved to hit a goose in the westbound lane, then swerved back to hit another goose in the eastbound lane. The incident was a blatant violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which protects Canada Geese and other migratory birds.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service investigated the case, with assistance from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Greenfield’s actions were deemed a deliberate attempt to harm the protected birds, and he now faces serious consequences.
Greenfield was convicted by a federal magistrate judge in Des Moines and could face up to six months in prison, a five-year term of probation, or a $15,000 fine. The sentencing date has not been set.
The conviction serves as a warning to those who would intentionally harm protected wildlife. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act is in place to safeguard migratory birds and their habitats, and violations will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
