Shadows of Bismarck were darkened last Friday as Maisie Elizabeth Barnson, 37, received a decade-long sentence for her role in the methamphetamine trade. The US Attorney Christopher C. Myers announced that Barnson was sentenced to ten years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release, marking a significant blow to the city’s drug underworld.
Barnson, who has been living in Bismarck, North Dakota, faced charges including conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. Her crime spree began around January 2016, when law enforcement first received reports of her distributing methamphetamine throughout the area.
On March 20, 2017, Chief US District Judge Daniel L. Hovland oversaw Barnson’s sentencing hearing, where he also ordered her to pay a $300 special assessment to the Crime Victims’ Fund. The judge’s stern verdict followed the discovery of an estimated one kilogram of methamphetamine and ten thousand dollars in cash during searches of Barnson’s hotel room and residence shared with her brother and codefendant, Matthew King.
This investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bismarck Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency. Special Assistant US Attorney Dawn Deitz led the prosecution, ensuring that justice was served for those affected by Barnson’s drug distribution activities.
The sentence handed down to Barnson serves as a stark reminder of the consequences facing those who participate in the illegal drug trade. The community of Bismarck has witnessed yet another chapter closed in their fight against crime and drug trafficking.
